Original Cyanotypes: Gabrielle Fromentin (@floriefrom)
Blind Yeo are a band, but Blind Yeo are also a collective, and a collaborative project – growing and changing in response to the landscape and the people around us in our community.
The cover artwork for Otherside is a cyanotype, an ethereal, pulsing, image made from sunlight and fabric, by artist Gabrielle Fromentin.
For the Otherside video, Gabrielle gave her cyanotypes to Ruby Ingleheart. We asked Ruby to respond intuitively and quickly, to improvise and play, in the way we make music; music and images handed back and forth:
“I used Gabrielle’s beautiful scans to create different shapes that pass through the central line of the composition. I filmed my screen multiple times, through different distorted objects, using my iphone,” she explains, “then I began layering them. I like the pixelated grit it adds when you refilm the same thing through different cameras. The film transitions from the organic texture of the printed cyanotypes to this multilayered video feedback which produces a colourful explosion of pulses, light dancing and circles turning. I often imagine different visual elements corresponding to the different instruments in the song, each following a melody and rhythm that has a unique quality and texture to it.”
We’re amazed by what she put together, and how naturally it fit our experience of the song.
“A circular motif felt important as the song has a cyclical feeling to it; Everything returns back to something. We see a man falling backwards and then re-appearing in reverse to reinforce a sense of self reflection, a shedding of old layers and being reborn with new skins.”
