Be Like A Mountain In A Moonlit Way is the debut album from Edinburgh synth-pop duo Both Hands – a record built on friendship, resilience, playful experimentation and an enduring belief in the healing power of making music together. Across eleven tracks, Hailey b (vocals) and Brian Pokora (synths, drum machines and sampling) conjure a world of shimmering electronics, soaring melodies and emotionally direct songwriting, balancing moments of euphoric release with quieter passages of reflection and wonder.
Having first connected only a few years ago, the pair quickly discovered a shared creative language, fuelled by an enthusiasm for electronic pop with depth, character and heart. What began as a series of Saturday-afternoon writing sessions soon became an artistic partnership defined by curiosity and joy, with ideas ricocheting back and forth in a constant exchange of voice notes, bass lines, melodies and half-finished lyrics. Against a backdrop of significant personal challenges, the process of creating Be Like A Mountain In A Moonlit Way became a source of solace and renewal for them both.
The result is an album that feels expansive yet intimate, playful yet deeply felt. Big arpeggiated synths and wonky sequenced rhythms sit alongside softer, more textural moments, while Beavis’ expressive vocals guide listeners through songs that are by turns mysterious, euphoric, funny, tender and defiant. From the elemental folk-horror atmosphere of opening track ‘Hold On’ to the hands-in-the-air camaraderie of ‘Ladder’, the glacial pulse of ‘Sea Spray’ and the glittering pop rush of ‘Lips Parted’, the album constantly shifts shape while maintaining a distinctive identity all of its own.
Named after a lyric from the album’s centrepiece ‘Ladder’, Be Like A Mountain In A Moonlit Way is both a statement of intent and a reminder to persevere. Shaped by the pair’s accumulated experiences as musicians, collaborators and friends, it is a record that embraces contradiction: deep and strange, but also warm, welcoming and enormous fun. Above all, it is an invitation to lose yourself in the music, and perhaps dance a little while you're there.
