Rick Redbeard is the alt-folk alter-ego of Scottish musician Rick Anthony, best known as the frontman of The Phantom Band and one half of gothic folk duo Afterlands. Originally from Aberdeenshire, Rick began performing solo after moving to Glasgow in the early 2000s. As The Phantom Band’s adventurous mix of folk, rock, electronics and psychedelia grew louder and more expansive, his solo work became a home for quieter, folk and country-influenced songs, carried by his distinctive, rich baritone. Two acclaimed albums followed on Chemikal Underground: No Selfish Heart (2013) and Awake Unto (2016).

After a period away from music-making, exchanging ideas with his friend Davey McAulay during lockdown led to Afterlands’ We Are The Animals In The Night, released by Lost Map in 2023. That collaboration helped rekindle Rick’s love of songwriting and brought him back to a collection of solo songs shaped over a decade of marriage, fatherhood, loss and life beyond Glasgow. His third album, To The Light Return, is his first solo release for Lost Map. Recorded with producer Graeme Young in the Aberdeenshire house where Rick grew up, with friends and family contributing, it finds humour, tenderness and hope in the strange business of growing older.
