Sulka is the project of Glasgow-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lukas Clasen, a self-described maestro of slanted DIY melodic rock whose music blends breezy intimacy with off-kilter pop instincts. Emerging in 2017 as a bedroom recording project, Sulka quickly built a reputation through a steady run of self-produced albums and EPs on cassette labels including Gold Mold, Death Collective, Common and Negative Hope. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Alex G, Elliott Smith and Guided By Voices, Clasen’s songs balance heartfelt melodicism with a scrappy, exploratory edge. Whether performing solo or with a full band, he has shared stages with the likes of PAWS, Sorry, Current Joys and Jeffrey Lewis & the Voltage.

After the scuzzy, high-energy Take Care (2021) and the more expansive, band-recorded Distractions (2023), Sulka’s third album Bute marks a return to his DIY roots. Written during a stay overlooking the Firth of Clyde and recorded at home in Glasgow, the album embraces the rawness and vulnerability of self-production, shaped by field recordings, found audio and a close-knit group of collaborators. Reflecting a shift in perspective as Clasen entered his thirties, Bute captures themes of growth, memory and connection, with songs that look outward to the natural world and the people within it, grounded in a renewed belief in authenticity, community and making art for its own sake.
