October is the scary season 👻, and we got a fright early in the form of news that Summerhall in Edinburgh has sadly run into some trouble with HMRC and is facing an uncertain future, such that it can't guarantee bookings between now and end of the year. While we wish everyone there the very best and hope to be able to return to Summerhall again in the future, we decided to shift this December's Lost Map's Xmas Humbug! festive special elsewhere to be on the safe side. A task which proved so difficult at such short notice that we came precariously close to cancelling outright. That was, until the lovely Traverse Theatre stepped in. Humbug! will go ahead as billed (two shows, daytime and evening), on the same date, Saturday, December 14, at the new venue, with all previously purchased tickets remaining valid. Christmas is saved! Thanks, Traverse Theatre! Unfortunately, the Traverse has a smaller capacity than Summerhall, meaning we're unable to sell as many tickets as we typically would. In other words: buy quick, because it's likely to sell out soon. Especially as we are now able to reveal some of this year's amazing line-up, which follows below. We think it's the best Humbug! line-up yet, and we hope you agree. Although what you really ought to ask is: "wer zum Teufel ist Painting?" because Painting are Germans, from Germany (Berlin to be specific). Rolling Stone Germany has called them: "the greatest new band in the German pop avant-garde", or to put that the German way: "Die tollste neue Band, die man gegenwärtig in der deutschen Pop-Avantgarde findet, ist das Berliner Trio Painting!" Lost Map brings you this crash lesson in the German language at no additional charge. When Painting's debut album Painting Is Dead – which was originally released on German label Antime in 2022 – found us through the digital ether a while back, we had two urgent questions: 1) Are Painting really dead, because that would be sad? and 2) If not dead, can we work with them? After a nervous wait, the answers came back in the negative/affirmative respectively, and away we went, on a journey which has brought us to the release of the trio's outrageously fun Lost Map debut single 'Maybe it's Like Riding in a Little Jeep'. A wild and exuberant seven-minute collision of prog, post-punk, jazz and electronica, which imagines life as a kind of radical off-road ride in a rugged high-end sports utility vehicle™, like some sort of Top Gear challenge on acid. It'll be followed on November 22 by a CD reissue of Painting Is Dead, in special double-disc expanded form, featuring bonus remixes (including a pair by Lost Map artists Susan Bear and Kinbote) plus a live album recorded at Kantine am Berghain in Berlin. All of which will be followed in 2025 by brand new music from Painting, TBA. In the meantime, we're bringing the band to the UK in December for their very first live dates over here. We entreat loyal fans of the south-west's most exciting new band Blind Yeo to display similar forbearance in the face of near intolerable delay, as the release date for the limited-edition vinyl version of their debut compilation album Echoes / Anam Cara is pushed back to November 1 due to unforseen production issues (sorry). Stave off your cravings in the meantime – as we sometimes do with e.g. a packet of Nik Naks Nice'n'Spicy as a "starter" – by listening to the track 'Corridors', out this month as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service.
