"I WAS BIDING MY TIME"

FEATURING: AFTERLANDS, KINBOTE, BLIND YEO, FLO LINES, SUSAN BEAR, AMY MAY ELLIS, PICTISH TRAIL
+ MORE
AFTERLANDS' DEBUT ALBUM WE ARE THE ANIMALS IN THE NIGHT IS OUT NOW
STREAM AND SHARE SESSION PERFORMANCE OF 'WHALE SONG'
BUY WE ARE THE ANIMALS IN THE NIGHT ON 12" VINYL
It feels like so very long ago now that we bumped into Davey from Afterlands mid-pandemic in a Sainsbury's™ car park and heard all about the exciting new songs he was working on with Rick Anthony AKA Rick Redbeard AAKA Rick from The Phantom Band. At that time their fledgling recording project didn't even have a name (let's call it Beforelands). And yet we were intrigued. Mainly we were hungry for the Sainsbury's Indian Takeaway Chicken Tikka, Jalfrezi, Rice & Naans Ready Meal for 2™ we'd just purchased. But also we were intrigued.

Fast forward some years later, and Afterlands' magnificient debut album We Are The Animals In The Night is finally out in the world via yer old pals Lost Map Records and being bought and consumed as voraciously by listeners as were the eight onion bhajis we ate that fateful day. If not so much the long since out-of-date jar of mango chutney, which is still putrefying disgustingly in the back corner of the fridge, in what has become a kind of ad hoc home science project.

Apt to warm you from the inside hotter than a fiery chicken pakora, We Are The Animals In The Night received a glowing ★★★★ review from The Scotsman, and got a nice plug from Gideon Coe on BBC6 Music the other night. Get a taste of Afterlands doing it live by watching them perform the stunning noirish ballad 'Whale Song' – featuring Jill O'Sullivan (Sparrow and the Workshop / Jill Lorean) on vocals and violin – as part of a Lost Map Session filmed at Pianodrome in Edinburgh here. The rest of the session is available exclusively to subscribers to Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service. Catch Afterlands on tour in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh next month, then in London supporting Pictish Trail in September (all dates/details below). You bring the poppadums, we'll bring the chutney ☣️

WATCH AND SHARE THE NEW KINBOTE VIDEO
From Krull (1983) to Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) the Lethal Weapon franchise, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000), Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005), and all of the Jason Bourne films except the last one (rubbish), we quite simply love great filmmaking. Which is why Matt Gibb AKA Kinbote is a man true to our own heart. A cinephile who lives for the expressive rush of the perfecty framed shot, profoundly human characterisation and the romance, drama and poetry of the screen.

To promote his recent, really amazing new album Hemisphere – which you can buy now on CD with zine from the Lost Map web shop dot com – Matt together with other filmmaking friends made a video for every single song on the record. He screened them all live last month, as part of a special audio-visual launch show for Hemisphere – and he'll be doing more of the same in future at dates TBA. In the meantime, you can watch one of the videos, for the track 'Thousand Smiles'. In which a ghostly figure stalks a barren Scottish countryside, between trippy animated segments where the landscape turns into a kind of quasi-Biblical geological soup replete with cool lightning. It could use a couple of guys fighting with massive swords, but otherwise 10/10 no notes.

STREAM AND SHARE 'OTHERSIDE' BY BLIND YEO
STREAM AND SHARE 'I WAS BIDING MY TIME' BY FLO LINES
There's been so much exciting new music coming Lost Map's way in recent months and the May PostMap Club song dümp proves it by featuring not just one but two brand new signings. The first comes all the way from down there, i.e. Cornwall, in the shape of eclectic cosmic folk collective Blind Yeo. Led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Will Greenham and featuring a shifting cast of other players, the project emerged from a creatively explosive residency at the newly opened Cornish Bank in 2022 – a vibrant not-for-profit community arts space in Falmouth at the heart of a thriving underground Cornish scene . It has since grown into a psychedelic carnival of sound best experienced live, as Blind Yeo's memorable set at Lost Map's Xmas Humbug in Edinburgh in December proved. Their debut single 'Otherside' is a six-and-a-half-minute blur of motorik beats, rave synths and jagged electric guitar runs. They're playing a bunch of festivals this summer – see below for details.

Also new to Lost Map is Flo Lines. No relation to Flo Rida, she's a London-based musician and artist who introduces herself intriguingly with The only thing left is everything EP – a pair of patiently searching, yearning, droning alt-folk songs between them lasting an immersive 12 minutes. The EP documents the steady development of Flo’s fascinating, collage-like approach to music making, informed by her background in radio production and audio-visual art. Combining sounds both found and played, she blends compositions from different takes captured in different spaces both indoors and out, to create slow sonic medleys that transport the listener through different places and feelings. Likened by a friend to “the feeling of ‘cold wind on your face’”, the song ‘I was biding my time’ is available to stream and share now. Flo will play an EP launch on Wednesday, June 12 at Avalon Cafe in London.
