PAINTING'S INCREDIBLE NEW ALBUM
SNAPSHOT OF PURE ATTENTION IS OUT NOW
|
|
Your attention, please, because Berlin prog-punk trio Painting's absolute riot of a new record is finally here. The vinyl was delayed a bit, meaning it sadly missed Record Store Day on Saturday (thanks to everyone who joined us for our all-dayer in Leith btw). But online orders are now ready to ship, and copies are on sale at among other places our mainland hub of Good Vibes on Constitution Street in Edinburgh. Wunderbar! If you are in the Germany area, why not pick up a copy at Painting's album launch show at Kantine am Berghain in Berlin next Thursday, April 24? Fantastisch!
A breathlessly unpredictable collision of punk energy, math-rock time signatures, techno beats, free-jazz sax solos, blaring synthesisers and tumbling call-and-response vocals, Snapshot Of Pure Attention is a tremendous amount of fun. The record is a joint release by Berlin’s Sinnbus and yer old pals Lost Map. It’s the much-anticipated follow-up to Painting’s critically acclaimed 2022 debut album Painting Is Dead, which saw them hailed as “the greatest new band in the German pop avant-garde” by Rolling Stone. Taking that same “try anything once” songwriting ethos as their debut to a whole new level, it draws influences from all from Omar Souleyman to Billie Eilish, Derya Yildirim and even lyrics generated by Google’s AI LaMDA language models. All patiently and painstakingly refined and boiled down to 36 minutes of exquisitely controlled sonic chaos.

LISTEN TO THE TITLE TRACK FROM FIRESTATIONS' FORTHCOMING NEW ALBUM MANY WHITE HORSES
|
|
Like Leonard "Oz" Osbourne in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, but entirely less xenophobic, Mike Cranny from Firestations has crossed the seas on an eye-opening journey of discovery. A song about new experiences and wide-open horizons written on an aging sea-warped boat guitar, ‘Many White Horses’ is the title track from the eclectic London art-pop ensemble's forthcoming fourth full-length new album, which is set for release on limited-edition 12” vinyl and via digital services on April 25, 2025. Fog on the Tyne!
Many White Horses is a collection of sea-soaked acoustic songs and instrumentals, interwoven with field recordings and lyrics drawn from the immediate surroundings of a sailing expedition around the west coast of Scotland, all brought together with warm, textured production. It’s in essence a solo album by Mike – the band’s singer and songwriter – who self-produced and played a variety of instruments on the record. Albeit it’s enriched too by contributions from bandmate Laura Copsey on flugelhorn, flute and vocals.
Firestations will play a launch show for Many White Horses at The Harrison in That London on Thursday, May 8 – tickets on sale now. Look out for a in-depth interview with the band in the next episode of the Lost Map Podcast.

APRIL POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. FAITH ELIOTT + L.T. LEIF
|
|
Like a Geordie Agustín Magaldi massively over-emoting in a bar in the hit musical film Evita [1996], some feelings can prove difficult to appropriately express. Faith Elliot sings about this, sort of, in the catchily-titled 'an ode of unrequited love from a hagfish to a giant isopod'. It's the latest single from their forthcoming new album dryas, and one of this month's PostMap Club subscription service releases. “A classic case of an anxious/avoidant attachment relationship dynamic," says Faith. "Hagfish are soft and spineless. They have four hearts and exude tremendous amounts of slime when threatened. The isopod is like a giant sea-woodlouse. They live very solitary lives. In this song, the anxiously attached hagfish sacrifices its boundaries to pine with unhinged abandon for the emotionally unavailable, avoidant isopod." Pre-order dryas now for more songs about exciting things like fish.
Meanwhile, from Canadian slow-felt swamp rock singer-songwriter L.T. Leif, comes a self-styled “mood-ful murk song” made with longtime collaborator Morgan Greenwood (Calgary, CAN). ‘Own Blood’ is in this month's PostMap Club too, and taken from an album of bonus tracks and rarities titled reflected, reflected, which is on streaming services now. “‘Own Blood’ takes place by the dark and frozen Finnish sea, and is about other people assuming inner knowledge of your secret self," says Leif. "It’s about helpful anger, and counters the trope of the body as being ‘frigid’ or otherwise cold if inaccessible. It is about the real ways a body melts – an internal/secret/precious process that can be supported but never claimed by others."
Also included in this month's PostMap Club:
Painting – 'White On White' (w/ exclusive live version + MixCloud mix)
Taken from new LP Snapshot Of Pure Attention (see above), a track that captures the band at their most frantic. Howling sax, highlife guitar and pounding beats all collide, with a gripping synth solo.
