PICTISH TRAIL'S LIFE SLIME ALBUM OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED; TOUR DATES ON SALE
|
|
|
SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN ⬇ FOR FULL LIST OF LIVE DATES
It was between roughly 3.5-4 billion years ago, in the primordial ooze of Earth’s early oceans, that simple chemical compounds first assembled into the earliest self-replicating forms of life. Around the same time Lost Map Records first began banging on about Pictish Trail's forthcoming new album Life Slime, and indeed selling copies of a fan first/tour exclusive pre-release Primordial Blue-In-Pink Goo Edition. This despite the album confusingly not yet being officially released, and indeed, despite the fact that humans wouldn't develop ears for at least another 3.5 million millennia.
It's been a long journey on this unusual campaign, but we are happy to finally be able to say: Life Slime, the brand new album by Pictish Trail, out April 10. Available to order now. To mark this landmark moment in history, we have announced yet another, different version of the vinyl, this one an exclusive shop release on so-called Toxic Lagoon Blue vinyl, with unique artwork. It looks lovely (see below).
But what does Pictish Trail's album Life Slime sound like, we hear you ask, and it's a good question. For a clue, try listening to the latest single (of six to date) 'Sorry Eyes', streaming now. A slice of strutting glam electro-pop in which Johnny – for Pictish Trail is he – explores "that messy psychological space where you internalise someone else’s anger and start directing it at yourself", he says. Johnny does this by among other things repeatedly blurring the words "eyes" and "ass". Which may sound like a recipe for aggressive conjunctivitis, but we can promise you is great fun when you hear it.
More exciting Life Slime updates coming soon, including what the album smells like (not ass); in the meantime scroll down (or click here) for a list of all of Pictish's upcoming full-band tour dates.

INTRODUCING: ISA GORDON – NEW ALBUM 8MEN ANNOUNCED;
STREAM TWO TRACKS NOW
|
|
Hailed as "patently a once in a blue moon talent” by the late great JD Twitch of Optimo, Isa Gordon is an Ayrshire-raised, Glasgow-based producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist whose uncategorisable output draws from club music, folk, punk, and experimental sound design. We're excited to be releasing her mesmerising new album 8Men, which is available to purchase now from the Lost Map webshop / Bandcamp and from Good Vibes in Leith, ahead of going live on digital services on March 20. It's a collection of traditionals and 20th century folk, punk, prog and metal covers rebooting the folk compilation in a brand-new musical language. Think The Corries on mushrooms. Not because it sounds anything like that, but just because it's a funny thing to think about.
Skirling electronics, hauntingly processed vocals and quaking beats meet timeless songs of love, war, family and womanhood, in a way that feels both fresh as the day and ancient as the hills. You can stream two tracks now, both released as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subsciption service in January. Built of portentous swirling synth drones and layered auto-tuned vocals, 8Men's first single ‘I Wish, I Wish’ was hailed by Clash as "a powerfully futuristic take on folk music" and "a kind of beatless synth phantasia... like Jeanie Robertson crossed with Laurie Anderson." Its follow up ‘Wheely Down’ is a hypnotizingly beautiful version of a Richard Thompson song, sung as a stirring lament for the changing landscape around Isa’s native Auchinleck.
“It’s a bit of an ode to the format of the folk compilation; collections artists and singers make of songs that resonate with them,” says Isa of 8Men. “I hope it can shed a new light on some of these trad tunes – that they still live, because they are reinterpreted, and not stuck in what can sometimes feel like the stuffy constraints of ‘tradition’ (whatever that means). Music doesn’t happen in a vacuum, folk at its best embraces this in the oral tradition: hearing, resonating and retelling.”

JANUARY POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. SEAMUS FOGARTY + BLIND YEO
|
|
A motorik-folk fusion powered by an unlikely combination of instruments from Moog synthesiser to tin whistle, ‘Fire’ is the second single to be taken from Seamus Fogarty’s wonderful new album Ships (released on limited-edition 12” coloured vinyl, CD and digital services on March 6; pre-order now). Released as part of this month's PostMap Club, 'Fire' is accompanied by a self-made video, filmed over two days either side of New Year's Eve, giving a fascinating glimpse into the Fogarty household. "I purposely left it until the last minute because, having no budget, it was the easiest approach," says Seamus, whom we can probably safely say isn't getting invited on the High Performance Podcast anytime soon. "At that point I had no choice but to reach out to various friends and family for help and we managed to pull something together, which is kind of the message of the song… that’s my explanation anyways.” You can catch Seamus on tour around the UK and Denmark in coming months, everywhere from Manchester to (*turns to camera*) Middelfart – see full list of dates below.
Revealing two distinct sides of their restless cosmic psychedelia, ‘Atomic Asteroid’ and ‘Otherside (Oh Mr James Version)’ is a double release by eclectic Cornish cosmic folk collective Blind Yeo. It’s the latest taste of a new cassette EP of collected Blind Yeo recordings called Today Tomorrow, which is technically an exclusive tour release, but we've got a handful of copies up for sale in the Lost Map dot com shop now. Blind Yeo are also about to share (as of 4pm UK time on Thu, Jan 22) the incredible live session they recorded for KEXP at Trans Musicales in France, featuring blistering performances of four tracks – stream it here once it goes live. New UK/EU Blind Yeo tour dates announced and listed all the way down there ⬇
About the two new tracks, Blind Yeo singer, songwriter and guitarist Will Greenham writes: “'Atomic Asteroid’ came about really quickly. I bought an ngoni after a gig – it’s like a Malian fretless banjo – from a musician who played at the Cornish Bank. New instruments often spark new songs, and this one practically wrote itself. The Oh Mr James version of ‘Otherside’ is more of a reimagining than a straight remix. He’s an electronic, experimental producer from Wales, now based in Cornwall, and a really important part of the incredible electronic music scene here – so we were honoured when he said he was up for doing it."
Also included in January's PostMap Club:
Isa Gordon – 'I Wish, I Wish' / 'Wheely Down'
New to Lost Map, Isa Gordon reimagines folk tradition through expansive electronics on ‘I Wish, I Wish’ and her haunting take on Richard Thompson’s ‘Wheely Down’.
