MANUELA ANNOUNCES LONG-AWAITED SECOND ALBUM ULTRAVIOLET
STREAM NEW SINGLE 'HYENA'
PRE-ORDER ULTRAVIOLET ON LIMITED-EDITION VINYL
Rejoice in the return of the inimitable Manuela, with the groovy-weirdy brilliance of 'Hyena'. Comfortably the greatest, if indeed only, song ever written about a young girl who hates going to parties so much that she gets her friend, a hyena, to murder her childminder, steal her face, crash the party, stink the place out, eat said childminder's face then jump out a window. Inspired by the short story The Debutante by the surrealist painter and writer Leonora Carrington, and released as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service in February together with a dubbed-out remix by Nadia Ksaiba & Seb-i, it's the latest single to be taken from Austria-born, Munich/London-based art-pop vocalist and songwriter Manuela's long-awaited second album Ulraviolet  – coming June 5, and co-written/produced with Nick McCarthy (Franz Ferdinand, FFS) and Polina Lapkovskaya.

When we released Manuela's critically-acclaimed self-titled debut album all the way back in 2017, the world looked so different. Fidget spinners were in fashion, only sci-fi nerds knew anything about AI, and our prized jar of Wickles "Dirty Dill" Cocktail Pickles™ remained within use by date, if already beginning to give off a cautionary pong. Every single copy of the Manuela record is long since sold out, and yet our jar of pickles remains – putrid and moulding in the back of the fridge, disgusting but somehow fascinating. Only now might we finally be able to let go and chuck it in the bin.

Nine years in the making and containing nine wry art pop tunes full of playful humour, sparkling production and lush arrangements to get swept away in completely, Ultraviolet is available to pre-order now. As well as 'Hyena', it also contains the previously-released single ‘Coniine’, featuring guest vocals from yer actual Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab. "The theme that runs throughout is describing a twilight world,” says Manuela of Ultraviolet. “The space beyond the physical realm: the ether, which we are fully aware of but can’t prove it exists. This is why the album is titled Ultraviolet. We just have to trust that which we know.”

More Manuela news soon!

PICTISH TRAIL SHARES NEW
VIDEO FOR 'SORRY EYES'
WATCH AND SHARE THE VIDEO BY FOREST OF BLACK NOW
PRE-ORDER 'LIFE SLIME' ON LIMITED-EDITION VINYL
SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN ⬇ FOR FULL LIST OF LIVE DATES

From Tom Cruise's Days of Thunder [1990] to Ryan Gosling's Drive [2011] and the Quentin Willson era of Top Gear [1991-2001], the lineage of "men on camera looking hot in/near cars" is long and true. It continues in fine style with Pictish Trail's new video for the song 'Sorry Eyes'. In which our bearded hero drives u crazy by smouldering his way around the streets, motorways and minor rural roads of Glasgow and the Greater Glasgow area, hanging out the top of a soft-top, looking hard in what is clearly a flagrant violation of the The Motor Vehicles (Wearing of Seat Belts) Regulations 1982. The gloriously old-school analogue vid is directed by Oscar Sansom and produced by Beth Allan, of Glasgow production company Forest of Black (Belle & Sebastian, Biffy Clyro, Franz Ferdinand).

'Sorry Eyes' – which Pictish Trail would like for radio producers at the BBC to be aware does not contain the word "ass", despite previous assertions to the contrary – is taken from Pictish AKA simply Johnny's forthcoming brand new album Life Slime. Available to pre-order now ahead of release on April 11, it's Johnny’s best and most personal record to date, and it features a string of well-received singles, all on streaming platforms now, including ‘Infinity Ooze’, ‘Hold It’, ‘Torch Song’, ‘Another Way’ and ‘Werewolf Ending’. Johnny will celebrate the release of Life Slime by taking to the road once again, this time not hanging out of a convertible but sensibly belted into a tour van, with full-band dates all over the UK everywhere from Irvine to Stowmarket, Totnes and even Wendover. Join him, at shows listed below, with yet more including some festivals TBA.

More Pictish Trail news coming soon, including a Guinness™ Book of World Records attempt (possibly)!

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR 'HELPING OTHERS' BY PAINTING
STREAM AND SHARE 'VALENTINE' BY OWEN & THE EYEBALLS
Complex synth arpeggios, call-and-response vocals and bags of chaotic energy clash in the latest explosive single ‘Helping Others’ by our favourite Berlin trio and yours Painting. It's accompanied by a suitably wild'n'colourful video by director Sam Wisternoff, of Bristol’s Ill Spectre Productions (Pictish Trail, James Yorkston, Yama Warashi), and backed by a remix by Edinburgh electronic duo Both Hands, who may or may not be (are) announcing some of their own music on Lost Map soon. ‘Helping Others’ is taken from Snapshot Of Pure Attention – Painting’s incredible second album, out now. A breathlessly unpredictable collision of punk energy, math-rock time signatures, techno beats, free-jazz sax solos, blaring synthesisers and tumbling antiphonal voices, the album was released last year on limited-edition 12” vinyl and via digital services, jointly by Berlin’s Sinnbus and the yer old pals Lost Map. Help others (us) by buying a copy, now. If you are in the Germany area, note that Painting have various live dates coming up there, listed below, with plans afoot for another UK tour later this year.

If you missed Valentine's Day by what is now a clear 96 hours and counting then you are probably dumped, sorry. Attempt a grovelling apology and reunion not with a cliched gift of pretty flowers nor a powerful s*x toy, but a warm-hearted art pop song about love, serendipity and a big beardy man with angel wings, in the shape of ‘Valentine’ by Owen & The Eyeballs. Available to stream and share now, it's the latest in a series of tracks the band of international illustrators turned never-knowingly-under-dressed pop stars have released in the build up to their much-anticipated second album Owen and The Eyeballs Too later this year (TBA). Their live shows are bright and bold affairs, involving oversized costumes made by designer friends and collaborators; catch them around the UK at dates including a support slot for Pictish Trail at The Lexington in London on May 10.

Also included in February's PostMap Club:

Pictish Trail –  'Sorry Eyes' + remixes from OnTheFly and R.Seiliog
A new Life Slime track with two expansive remixes — a seven-minute electro workout from OnTheFly and a motorik, kraut-leaning reimagining of ‘Another Way’ by R. Seiliog.

Manuela – 'Hyena' + Nadia Ksaiba & Seb-i remix
A jagged, swaggering new single taken from the forthcoming album Ultraviolet, blending humour, cool detachment and off-kilter pop instinct. Comes with seriously dubbed-out rework from Nadia Ksaiba & Seb-i.
